As many of you know, the department has been using the Active911 application for mobile devices over the past month.  It seems to be working fairly well and I have received very positive feedback.  Anyone that would like the app for their phone should contact AC Arnold via e-mail (sarnold@valpo.us) and provide the following information:

Personal e-mail address
mobile telephone number
type of phone (iPhone / Android)

The software engineers of this program have been working hard to provide additional features some of which are already in place and much more to come later this year.  BC Bottorff and myself have been adding pre-plans to the mapping feature and you will notice information is available to you by clicking on the markers in the maps.

I have also been informed that Active911 will be phasing out the "Beta" testing of their software in the very near future.  This means they are considering a usage fee of $12 - $13 per user annual fee.  We are working out details on how the cost will be covered (individuals vs. agency) and more information will follow.  If anyone is interested in this app for their mobile device, I would encourage you to download it now and register before the fee for service goes into effect.  If anyone has additional questions, please feel free to contact AC Arnold.

The following dates have been confirmed to tour the new Porter Regional Hospital facility:

August 7th  0900 & 1300
August 8th  0900 & 1300
August 9th  0900 & 1300
August 14th (Make-up Day for B Crew) ?????? Tentative


Our goal is to tour the new facility and gain familiarization with the Emergency Department - Electrical Systems - Elevators - Fire Suppression Systems - Cath Lab - OB and any other pertinent areas that may need to be included for a fire / ems response.

The tours will be conducted with Portage FD and others (Chesterton FD & Liberty FD??)

More information will follow and will be provided by the BC's as we get closer.

Effective July 1, 2012 all paramedics in the State of IN are now "Licensed".  This change will allow hospitals and other healthcare providers utilize paramedics in a more expanded capacity.  This does not change any inservice reporting requirements and expiration dates will remain the same.  As of now, there will be NO associated fees with license renewal.  Also, liability is no different under licensure than it was under certification.

(Don was always known for having a "towel" around his neck when working on the ambulance (he was "warm-blooded").

ALS Rescue / Engine inventories have been updated to include the new quantities of medications as well as the additions / deletion of certain meds.  Medication expiration forms have also been changed and laminated for the stations.

All new medications have been placed on the trucks and the new protocols are in effect immediately.  In addition, the remainder of the drug box inserts have also arrived and have been re-fitted in to the ALS vehicles to accomadate the meds.  Please take the time to familiarize yourselves with the new configuration.

Protocol reviews / exams will be wrapping up this week.  Once completed, the department will begin to operate under the new protocols.  Please continue to review and familiarize yourself with them so our transition will be seamless.  Thank you all for your patience!

Protocol reviews / testing will begin now that the extrication training is complete.  I plan to meet with each of the crews / stations over the next 1-2 weeks to answer any questions and clarify a few things before the medics complete the exam.  Our target "go live" date is June 8th at the latest.  I appreciate everyone's patience as we work through this busy month.

TB Tests for department personnel will begin the first week of June.  Working Well has agreed to do the tests at Stations 1 & 2 as we did last year.

Proposed Rule Change to be voted on by EMS Commission on Friday, May 18th regarding the transport of Trauma Patients to the closest Trauma Facility.  Highlighted areas indicate the proposed 45 minute travel time.

Although this rule change will not affect the Valparaiso Fire Department, it will have a serious impact to our neighboring communities.

In the next week, the NATO Summit will be coming to Chicago. Numerous alerts by many agencies have been sent out in regards to vehicles possibly being stolen during this time to be used for illegal purposes. With this in mind we have to be more aware and cautious.

Two Paramedics in Puerto Rico have been charged with first-degree murder in the killing of a competing Paramedic from another private ambulance company whom they felt stole a patient. The 2 men also face previous weapons violation charges in unrelated cases. One more reason for thorough background checks. The two are accused of fatally shooting 31-year-old Luis Deida Martinez on Wednesday while he ate breakfast at a local bakery. The victim had apparently argued with the two suspects a day earlier after his wife picked up a patient that they claimed should have been transported by them

Friendly reminder sweep out the back of the ambulances at the end of each shift

Sent out a memo today pertaining to the ongoing issues with the elastic bands holding medication vials/ampules in our med boxes. We will be replacing them with a different type of insert. Unfortunately we are unable to obtain the same type of inserts and don't have many other options so this is the best solution for the department at this time. Rescue 2818 med box has been changed and other Rescues will follow as the inserts arrive.
