The Valparaiso Fire Department is NOT accepting applications at this time.  We are in the middle of the testing process already, and once the new list is established with the ranking of each candidate, the list will be "good" from January 1st, 2017 - December 31st, 2019.

The Valparaiso Fire Department currently operates with 67 full-time Firefighters, many of whom are also cross-trained as EMT's or Paramedics.  We strive to hire qualified individuals that will act with integrity, compassion, and professionalism, and will continue their career with us following our Mission Statement and Values.

We are participating in a testing consortium with 2 other area fire departments, to include Chesterton FD and Portage FD. All 3 of these fire departments offer competitive salaries, health insurance, and other benefits. The pension program is through State of Indiana PERF. Personnel work a 24 hour on-duty/48 hour off-duty rotation. Personnel are members of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), and have labor contracts with the cities that they work in. In this testing process you will be able to check off which fire department(s) you would like to try out for; you may check up to all 3 if you'd like. These fire departments hire various numbers of people each year depending upon retirements, disabilities, etc.

State Statute mandates that an applicant must be a minimum of 21 years of age and not yet reached their 36th birth date at the time of hiring. (The age limit must be waived to 40 years and 6 months for Veterans of the Armed Forces who have served at least 20 years, and have otherwise passed all of the testing requirements for any applicant, including physical agility test. PERF is required to accept the age extension). An applicant for the Valparaiso Fire Department must also be a resident of Porter County or an adjoining county at the time of hiring, and is also a requirement for continued employment.

As an applicant, you should be aware that before you can be hired, you have to possess a current State of Indiana EMT certificate or Paramedic license. If you do not possess one of these certifications at this time, it should not discourage you from applying for employment or keep you from completing the application process. The process consists of several steps that should be completed by November 2016. Once the process is complete, a list will be formulated with the ranking of each applicant. This list will be "good" from January 1st, 2017 - December 31st, 2019. It is acceptable for any applicant to receive their proper EMT or Paramedic credentials anytime within this time period.

Enclosed in the application packet that is picked up from any of the 3 Fire Department headquarters, you will find:
  • The application form
  • The description of the Candidate Swim Test & Aerial Ladder Climb
  • Disclosure and Release of Information Authorization Form - must be signed and returned with the application. Background checks will only be done upon hiring.
  • The "Press Release" on the hiring process.

** You MUST include the following items with your application that is turned in:

  • Completed Application Form
  • Copy of your Driver's License
  • Copy of your Social Security Card
  • Copy of High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Copy of your Birth Certificate
  • Copes of any certifications you may have
  • The signed Disclosure and Release of Information Authorization Form
  • ** Failure to turn in the appropriate documents by the given deadline will disqualify you from continuing in the consortium testing process for all 3 Fire Departments!**
The CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) will be the physical agility test that is utilized during this consortium testing process to evaluate the candidate's physical ability to perform essential job tasks . What is the CPATWhere can I take the CPAT before October 2016?

Scheduled Testing Dates for Applicant Reference:

  • Friday, August 12th, 2016 BY NOON - all applications, including all appropriate documents must be turned in to any of the 3 Fire Department headquarters.
  • Saturday, September 17th, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. - Written Test, Swim Test, and Aerial Ladder Climb. Location: Portage High School (West Auditorium) 6400 U.S. Highway 6, Portage, IN 46368. **Do not forget your swimsuit!**
  • Saturday, October 15th and Saturday, October 22nd, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. - Interview process with the hiring boards of each department. Please feel free to bring resumes and any other material to assist you in your interview. **You MUST bring your current CPAT physical agility testing card WITH YOU to the interview as proof of successful completion of the course** You will be advised of your interview time when you complete the first three steps as outlined in the bullet point above. All of the interviews will be 20 minutes in length. Location to be determined.
  • Monday, November 21st, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. - Portage Fire Merit Commission meeting at Portage Fire Department Station # 1 (3401 Swanson Ave., Portage, IN 46368). All applicants will be ranked in their position of hire at this meeting. It is NOT mandatory to attend this meeting; your attendance is optional. Once all applicants are ranked, you will be sent a letter advising you of your position on the hiring list.
It is a standing rule that applicants are not to request a reschedule date for any portion of new applicant testing. Dates for testing, as advised by the hiring process, will stand as scheduled unless conditions for testing are outside the hiring process control. Should this occur, the hiring process will advise new applicants of the new test date(s).
