Trash Pickup Information

Trash Pickup Information:

  • Trash must be curbside by 7:00am on the day of pick up. We can pick up your trash any time between 7:00am and 3:00pm on your day of pick up.
  • Place the can in the right of way with the arrow on the lid pointing toward the street.
  • Bag your trash; loose garbage will blow away when the can is dumped.
  • Do not place your can near obstructions (e.g. mailboxes, utility poles, parked cars, etc.).
  • Do not place hot ashes or flammable materials in your can. Damaged cans due to misuse will be the responsibility of the homeowner. Damaged can replacement cost is the actual cost of the container.
  • Do not place any items on top of the trash can.

 

Large Bulk Items, Household Construction and Demolition Debris:

  • For pick-up of large bulk items and household construction and demolition debris that will not fit into the disposal unit, the Public Works Division must be notified 48 hours prior to regular refuse collection to schedule an additional pick-up. A trip charge of $10.00 for each scheduled additional pick-up and a $15.00 fee per cubic yard of refuse in excess of a disposal until will be assessed to the customer. Please reference fee schedule. (Section 53.15 (K))
  • Household construction and demolition debris not to exceed 3 cubic yards may be placed in suitable containers that are in good condition, have secure handles for lifting, are water tight sufficient to keep out rain water, do not exceed 30 gallons and/or 30 pounds or in bundles not exceeding 2 feet in diameter by 4 feet in length. The Executive Director or designee may determine that the amount of construction and/or demolition debris is too much for the City to pick up and may require a private hauler be used to remove the debris. Paint:

  • Latex paint only (no oil based) will be picked up ONLY IF the paint has been dried. A drying agent such as cat litter or sawdust may be added.
  • Place paint cans next to your trash can with the lid off, for curbside pick up. Remember to contact us at (219) 462-6174 for pick up.

Recycling:

  • The City encourages participation by all residents. 
  • ACCEPTABLE ITEMS -- Click the link to the view the flyer provided by Homewood Disposal.
  • All accepted recyclables go in the same container--no need to separate recyclables.

  • Electronic Items (anything with a plug) should never be placed in your refuse can as these cannot go into the landfill.
  • Public Works must be notified 48 hours prior to regular collection to schedule an additional pick-up.
