Contractors will begin work on a multi-mile roadway improvement project in Valparaiso starting Tuesday, Sept. 21 with milling and paving on Calumet Avenue from Bullseye Lake Road to Morgan Boulevard. To minimize disruption to surrounding businesses, most of the work will be take place at nighttime, between 7:00 pm and 7:00 am. Construction will begin at Bullseye Lake Road, heading south. This work will take approximately two weeks to complete, always remaining open for motorists, with all businesses retaining access.
“This is an ambitious roadway project that will improve some of the city’s most important streets, ultimately improving these well-traveled roadways for years to come,” said Mayor Matt Murphy. “We share the public’s interest in minimizing the disruptions, which is why we’ve worked with contractors to establish much of the work schedule in overnight hours,” he said. The City acknowledges that several improvements are taking place simultaneously throughout Valparaiso. “We have different contractors working throughout the city and, while we have experienced some delays due to material shortages and utility providers, we look to see the majority of these projects substantially complete by Thanksgiving,” said Valparaiso Engineering Director Mike Jabo.
The entire multi-mile project will include improvements on Calumet Avenue from Morgan to Bullseye Lake, Roosevelt Road from LaPorte to Calumet and Morgan Boulevard from Lincolnway to Calumet. Work will include structural resurfacing that will substantially extend the life of the roadway, plus pavement markings, curb repairs, sidewalk repairs along the roadway, including ADA ramps to improve accessibility. The multi-mile project is a $2.6 million investment in the city, supported by a
$1 million Community Crossing grant.
