Ellen DeMartinis has been named to the Advisory Human Relations Council for the City of Valparaiso, announced Mayor Matt Murphy. “Ellen DeMartinis has worked tirelessly for decades to advocate for others,” said Murphy. “We’re so pleased to have her join the Human Relations Council.”
DeMartinis retired in 2019 as Chief Executive Officer for Opportunity Enterprises, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping individuals with developmental disabilities to reach their fullest potential. She continues to volunteer with OE and serves on the organization’s Human Rights Committee, along with being a member of the Rotary Club of Valparaiso and active volunteer with Valparaiso Nazarene Church. DeMartinis is the recipient of a Sagamore of the Wabash, one of Indiana’s highest honors, bestowed by the governor for distinguished service to the citizens of Indiana.
The Advisory Human Relations Council advances and supports community inclusion, providing counsel and assistance to the mayor. Appointed by the mayor, the Board includes 14 members, including five non-voting members representing the City of Valparaiso, Valparaiso University and the Valparaiso Community Schools. The board meets quarterly. For more information, visit Valpo.us.
