Jon Costas

A 1975 graduate of Valparaiso High School, Jon received his B.A. from St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana, and his law degree with high distinction from Valparaiso University School of Law in 1989. Mr. Costas is an attorney with Burke, Costanza, and Cuppy LLP, and specializes in the field of Elder Law, having obtained his certification in elder law from the National Law Foundation. He is also an adjunct professor at Valparaiso Law School.

Jon Costas is a long-term Valparaiso resident who has been involved in his community in many ways. He began his political career in 1985, winning an at-large seat on the Valparaiso City Council. He has been Mayor since 2004 and has made a name for himself as an extraordinary leader who advocates both careful planning and positive action.

Before he took office, an ambitious Jon Costas developed a comprehensive plan for the city and today many of his ideas have become reality. The city has revitalized East Lincolnway and the Cumberland Crossing area. The city’s downtown has undergone a facelift and is attracting new business, more shoppers and more diners, and the positives continue as we look forward to a new downtown park later this year. Our city is more secure, with a progressive new downtown police station created from a vacant building, plus a third fire station and city ambulance service. The Valparaiso Street project, which had been on the books for more than two decades, is now an efficient and attractive roadway that’s also improving drainage for miles around. Valparaiso has new and more efficient roadways, as well as a plan in place to fund road repairs.

The list of positive changes for Valparaiso is long, but it’s particularly satisfying to learn that the city is also in excellent shape financially, with minimal borrowing and a rainy day fund approaching $4 million – due in large part to the fact that the city has been able to win more than $45 million in state and federal grants. Mayor Costas also manages to run a successful law practice, thanks to his capable legal staff. Costas Law is one of just 15 attorneys in the state to specialize in the field of elder care, assisting senior citizens and their families. Mayor Costas enjoys a variety of activities, including running, biking, reading, playing guitar, singing, speaking, and competing in triathlons. Jon, his wife, Sharon, their four children, and two dogs, Lainie and Wrigley, live on Valparaiso's north side.
