The Valparaiso Police Department and Mayor Jon Costas are reminding the public of their ongoing commitment to promote safe firearm storage, offering free gun safety locks for residents. “Safe firearm storage is one of the most effective ways to prevent accidental shootings, especially involving children, and to reduce the risk of firearm theft,” said Valparaiso Police Chief Andrew McIntyre. “Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for every gun owner in our community to store their firearms safely and responsibly."
Free gun locks are available at the Valparaiso Police Department, located at 355 Washington St., Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Community members are encouraged to stop by and pick one up. No registration, ID or paperwork required.
Why Safe Storage Matters:
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF):
- Nearly 4.6 million children in the U.S. live in homes with unsecured, loaded firearms.
- In households where firearms are stored unlocked and loaded, the risk of accidental shootings and injuries increases dramatically.
- Proper storage — including the use of a gun lock or safe — can reduce the risk of unintentional firearm deaths by up to 85%
How Gun Locks Help:
A gun lock is a simple but effective device that prevents a firearm from being loaded or fired. When used correctly, gun locks:
- Prevent unauthorized access, especially by children or individuals who may be in crisis.
- Serve as a visible deterrent to improper handling.
- Represent a cost-free and easy step toward responsible gun ownership.
