Valpo Parks Introduces Advisory Speed Limits to Improve Safety

Parks safety zone signs with seesaw

Valpo Parks has introduced a plan to improve safety and traffic measures surrounding Valpo Parks facilities, including advisory speed limits and designated pedestrian connections. “Safety is a priority at our parks and this program is designed to raise awareness of speeds and pedestrians, enhancing safety surrounding our parks,” said Valpo Parks Director Kevin Nuppnau.

The new advisory speed limit will be 20 miles per hour throughout the zone, extending approximately 200 feet from the edge of park property in both directions. The zones will be clearly marked with yellow signs featuring a seesaw icon. In addition, piano key (striped) crosswalks will be painted at select intersections within the speed zones.

An advisory speed limit is a posted speed recommendation and is only informational; not enforceable.

The Valpo Parks Foundation will be funding the project. The new speed zone signage and striping will be installed next spring at 12 Valpo Parks facilities, including 200 East, Banta Park/Activity Center, Berkley Park, Bicentennial Park, Discovery Cottage Preschool, Fairgrounds Park, Tower Park, Glenrose South Park, Jessee-Pifer Park, Ogden Botanical Garden, ValPLAYso Park and Will Park.
