Station 1 Dedication

There was a ceremonial dedication of Fire Station #1 on Friday, April 15th, 2016 to honor our former Fire Chief David P. Nondorf that passed away in 2015.  A sign next to the front public entry door was added to the building that displays his badge # 57 in honor of his time and dedication to the Department, the City, and its citizens and visitors.

History

Fire Station One was constructed in 1963 and became the Central Fire Station.  This is our only station that is 2 floors; and no, there is no fire pole.  An addition was added in 1988, providing two offices for department Administration.  As more personnel were added and more room was needed to accommodate the 24 hour shifts, the majority of the Administration moved to the newer and larger station 2 on the North side of town. The building went through a major renovation in 2010 for some needed updates and redesign, and added a bunk room upstairs for the expanding personnel. In the beginning of 2017, renovations took place to replace some of the aging piping and to the upstairs bathroom.

Staffing at Station 1

Engine 1 and Rescue 1 are staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by full-time Valparaiso Firefighters.  Many of our Firefighters are also medically trained as either EMT's or Paramedics.  Engine 1 is Advanced Life Support equipped and staffed with at least one Paramedic to begin advanced care until an ambulance arrives to continue care and transport.  Rescue 1 is also Advanced Life Support equipped and does 911 transports to area hospitals by our cross-trained Firefighter/Paramedics.
