[ARCHIVED] Valparaiso Roadway Projects Move Forward (Update)

Press Release Photo

The City of Valparaiso is making significant progress on current roadway projects with many nearing completion. “We’re nearly finished with the multi-mile project to improve some of our most traveled roadways, including Roosevelt Road, Calumet Avenue and Morgan Boulevard,” said Valparaiso Engineering Director Mike Jabo.

In the coming weeks, motorists can expect:

Periodic lane closures on Vale Park Road between Campbell Street and Valparaiso Street to allow for milling and resurfacing of this much-traveled roadway. The project will also replace the speed tables, a traffic calming feature designed to accommodate longer vehicles, such as school buses and emergency vehicles.

The City of Valparaiso has been working with Valparaiso Community Schools to accomplish these roadway improvements on a schedule that minimizes disruption for traffic to Valparaiso High School. Weather permitting, the scheduled closures of Vale Park Road (between Campbell Street and Valparaiso Street) are:

  • Closed Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 6-7 from early Saturday morning through Sunday evening, reopening for Valparaiso High School arrival on Monday morning.
  • Closed from 9:00 am on Monday, Nov. 8 through Monday evening. School dismissal traffic will make use of a posted detour that day, with school buses made aware of the change.
  • An additional closure day will be required during the school week, in order to complete construction of the safety-enhancing speed tables on Vale Park Road. This closure will be scheduled to begin after VHS arrival and complete prior to VHS dismissal.
  • During closure periods of Vale Park Road, a detour for traffic will be posted.

Further roadway work in the City of Valparaiso includes:

  • Finishes on Roosevelt Road, Calumet Avenue and Morgan Boulevard, including manhole grading, traffic signal detectors and final pavement markings. “Most of this project is complete, upgrading more than four miles of our main arteries for years to come,” said Jabo. “We were pleased to complete a good deal of this work during overnight hours to minimize disruption to motorists,” he said. Sidewalks and curbs along the construction route have also been completed, including the installation of ADA ramps to improve accessibility.
  • Silhavy Road improvements continue as work has continued on the west side at the intersection of Evans Avenue. Traffic remains restricted to southbound and the west approach at Evans Avenue remains closed. Work north of the Canadian National railroad crossing is expected to be completed before Thanksgiving. At that time, the entire stretch of Silhavy Road will be opened in both directions. Work will resume for the section of Silhavy Road south of the Canadian National railroad crossing in the Spring of 2022. The Silhavy project includes new curbs, gutter, storm sewers, plus a new signal and added turn lanes at the intersection of Silhavy Road and Evans Avenue.
  • Over the next 2 weeks, alley improvements and other neighborhood street and sidewalk upgrades will be finalized, which will be communicated directly to residents affected.
