[ARCHIVED] Uptown Project for Workforce Housing Begins

Developers for Uptown Apartments, along with city representatives and nonprofit partners, including the Hope Center of Valparaiso and Family Scholar House, kicked off the transformation of Uptown Apartments into workforce housing units on March 8. The project will convert 119 units from shared student housing to apartments that will be available at discounted rates for qualified applicants. The new units will include modern kitchens with new appliances, walk-in closets and group spaces, including fitness facilities and game rooms – all within steps of downtown and Valpo Transit options.

“We’re looking forward to these added housing options for local workers, close to downtown and the V-Line and Valpo Dash. These new, modern units will extend the vibrancy of our downtown eastward and bring new opportunities for workers as well as for surrounding businesses,” said Mayor Matt Murphy.

John Leurck, a member of Uptown’s development team, acknowledged the positive role of the City in moving the project forward.  “The support of the Mayor, City Council, and City staff was crucial.  From parking needs, litigation, rezoning, and helping us secure instrumental federal tax credits through the Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority, the City was a true partner,” he said.

While anyone may qualify to live at Uptown, the newly remodeled one and two-bedroom units in the two buildings closest to Lincolnway will be discounted to serve residents who meet income guidelines. “I encourage local businesses to share these opportunities with those who may qualify,” said Murphy. “This project at Uptown is an excellent complement to the Linc apartments, recently introduced for downtown. Both projects accomplish longstanding goals of expanding housing in our downtown area. We look forward to the added options and increased opportunities downtown,”
